August 14, 2009 – Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area is temporarily closed due to damage from the Corral Fire.

On the afternoon of Thursday, August 13, 2009, a wildland fire started on private property adjacent to Carnegie SVRA. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The fire was initially driven by strong winds and spread quickly, burning onto State property and causing damage to the eastern portion of the park. The fire later turned away from the park, and continues to burn southeast towards Patterson. The park unit will remain closed until fire crews have completed emergency operations.

Approximately 250 acres of the eastern portion of the park were burned, including fence lines and areas of dense vegetation. The entire eastern portion of Kiln Canyon (east of Kiln Road), SRI Road, and the lands above the motocross track were burned. Temporary closures of these areas will remain in effect until a full assessment of damages can be made, and restoration of damaged areas initiated.

Please check back at this web page for updates. We will try to post them as soon as they are available. You can also reach the park office at 925-447-9027.
